The Boss Restaurant 大班餐廳餅店

With The Boss Restaurant, Fortune House Seafood, Kawawa Japanese and Sekai Udon Bar as the only current restaurant choices in Metropolis at Metrotown, sometimes the food court may be a better option. The aforementioned restaurants are not necessarily that bad (with a couple of exceptions), but the food is not really all that great either. I was curious to try The Boss again though because the place is memorable to me.

The Boss Restaurant is memorable to me because my first visit here was when I was in high school, it was also my first time visiting a Hong Kong style cafe. HK style cafes have never been my type of restaurant to go to and I remember ordering a burger and fries on my first visit LOL. I remember wishing that I could have went to McDonalds instead… I never liked No.9 Restaurant in Richmond too and remember ordering hash browns there on my first visit. But as of last year, I do not mind HK cafes anymore because some of the restaurants carry steaks. Although the quality may not always be the best… the steak options do save me from stressing out about what to order.

Majority of the seating arrangements at The Boss are comfortable booths, but there are a few tables at the back. The restaurant also has plenty of staff so there is no problem waving someone down, but you have to wave them down if you need their attention or want them to clear plates. On our visit, majority of the staff were extremely miserable looking too and impatiently tossed the food on our table. But May was extremely friendly and such a sweetheart. Too bad we only saw her at the beginning and the end.

Redbud Restaurant 紫荊閣餐廳

For three consecutive days, we headed to Richmond for an errand only to end up forgetting because we focused on eating! This was irritating because the both of us reminded ourselves to "not forget" before eating. Fortunately after three trips to Richmond though, we finally got the errand done before dinner. So as we circled around Richmond looking for a place to eat, we agreed to pass on live seafood along with bubble tea restaurants and settled for a Hong Kong Style Cafe.

Only since the beginning of the year, it was impossible for me to set foot in a HK style cafe, but now I no longer mind because some of the restaurants offer steak. There are also only two HK style cafes in Richmond that serve above average food to us which are La Amigo along with Kingspark Steak House. However when circling around, BF noticed Redbud twice and kept yapping about the restaurant so I decided to give it a go. Plus, some of the photos that were uploaded from someone related to the restaurant did not look bad.

Redbud appears to be a new HK style cafe and a higher end one, offering dishes such as rack of lamb, steak and lobster. The restaurant is fairly spacious and there are booth seating arrangements along the walls and tables in the centre. On our visit, there was an older waitress along with a younger one and both were friendly. The younger waitress was very attentive and polite too.

Hollywood Steak House 荷李活餐廳

Another Hong Kong style cafe restaurant? Well, we went to Richmond for hot pot at Chubby Lamb because we really needed "real hot pot", as in having a flavourful broth (Chinese chicken herbal in our case). But, the restaurant is temporarily closed! Since neither of us felt like having seafood for dinner and there are no restaurants in Richmond we were craving for, we decided to try out Hollywood Steak House.

Although despite the name of the restaurant, they do not even offer steak! I was expecting something along the lines of La Amigo or Kingspark Steak House's steak offerings, but instead Hollywood Steak House offers generic HK style cafe food. The menu includes curry, baked rice dishes, noodle in soup, spaghetti, hot plates combos, rice dishes and sandwiches. In addition, there is nothing over $11.95! Perhaps  it is a HK style cafe version of Moulin Rouge?

As for the Hollywood in the restaurant's name, it must refer to the interior. There are black and white photos of Audrey Hepburn, Bruce Lee, Marilyn Monroe, Schwarzenegger, Stallone, and even some cut outs. Asides from the Hollywood theme, the restaurant has comfortable seating arrangements and is not cramped.

Curry King Cafe 咖哩皇餐廳

After finishing up with some groceries at T&T and needing dinner ASAP in the area, we settled on Curry King. Curry King seems to be one of those places where many people drive by and think the restaurant is probably "meh", or at least for me it was. The restaurant is located on Kingsway Street in Burnaby and is in the same strip along with Bubble World, Waves as well as Hot Luck.

When we walked in, the interior surprised me. The restaurant is bigger as well as cleaner than I thought, and does not look run down. In addition, there was a nice fried rice aroma and the restaurant has AC. Another thing that surprised me was the waitress. She looked miserable, pointed towards which seat we should take, and tossed the menus.

Curry King has a large menu which includes a variety of congee, soup, laksa, ramen, udon, build your own noodles, curry, and the typical HK style cafe selections such as baked dishes and hot plates.

Cafe Gloucester 告羅士打餐廳

So I apparently think I am the queen of Hong Kong style cafe restaurants. I know the concept of ordering, what a set menu usually includes, and can distinguish between a better or not so great one. Cafe Gloucester can be considered a "higher end" HK style cafe and was the first to offer steaks as well as lobster. Having said that, obviously I had to make a visit.

Cafe Gloucester is a large restaurant and there are plenty of seats. The restaurant is divided into two sections by wooden dividers, and is very spacious as well as clean. Furthermore, Cafe Gloucester is the only HK style cafe I have been to that provides placemats. Although not like it matters… lol.

E2 Cafe Restaurant

RESTAURANT IS NOW CLOSED

Once formerly known as Lulu Cafe is now E2 Cafe, a Hong Kong style cafe restaurant. The restaurant is located in Burquitlam and is the only HK style cafe restaurant in the area.

Before I started blogging (a year ago), I have been here a couple of times and the food was decent, as well as edible. So, we decided to revisit because I did not want to go to Denny's. Plus, on previous visits, I have never ordered any "HK style cafe" items such as a hot plate or one of those select three items kind of deal, and I wanted to this time. Also, with such good finds such as La Amigo and Kingpark Steak House, I thought E2 Cafe may be good as well.

Walking in, a friendly as well as welcoming waitress greeted us and she was the only one at the front of the house. The restaurant is a good size and the seating arrangements are not cramped. Plus, I cannot imagine there ever being a line up. However, the parking lot has literally only ten spots and most of the parking stalls are taken by Sushi California customers! So if you come during peak hours, good luck finding parking LOL.

Kingspark Steak House 京士柏餐廳

Only up to a year ago, it was impossible for anyone to make me sit at a Hong Kong style cafe restaurant; I just simply hated them and would rather go to McDonalds. The reason is, HK style cafes never suited me before and I do not like their menus (IE one item with rice, spaghetti or some other form of carb, or a baked rice/spaghetti dish). So, I would be starving but at the same time torturing myself since when I am picky, I will not touch anything I do not want. However, fast forward to a year later, I do not mind going to HK style cafes when I am not hungry. Or to be entirely honest, occasionally visit HK style cafes when I am feeling scrubby and do not want to be seen by anyone important lol.

Walking in, there were a few waiters on the floor and every one of them was friendly as well as professional. We were provided with a few different menus and as usual, I was overwhelmed. When browsing the menus, I usually start by eliminating any beef with vegetable (beef with gai lan, beef with bittermelon…) as well as pork dishes (honey garlic spare ribs, sweet n’ sour…), and go straight to the steaks or hot plates. By the way, I do not even use the hot plates properly and will never pour sauce over the food because I like the natural flavours LOL. Unless the sauce is really good...

La Amigo Restaurant 雅谷餐廳

A post I have delayed for a while is my pre-dinner at Amigo Restaurant because I never took a photo of the restaurant's exterior LOL. I mean, I could have, but on my visit, it was pouring rain and well… obviously not worth it. In addition, I kept forgetting to take a photo every time I went back to Richmond! However, fortunately a long time reader and IGer of mine, crispylechon, actually took the photo for me! He joked (or I hope he was joking...) about almost getting hit by a car while snapping away. So thanks to crispylechon for this photo!

I always struggle when finding a restaurant during the 2:30pm-5:00pm period in Richmond. Usually it is because I do not want to visit a Chinese restaurant earlier than 6:00pm, and am not a big fan of Hong Kong style cafes or bubble tea food. Especially when I am really hungry. Furthermore, my last experience at a Hong Kong style cafe, ABC HK Cafe, was horrible, the absolute worst. So, after circling around for thirty minutes, my friend and I decided on Amigo because I was making her really mad with my indecisiveness. Plus, she has been interested in trying the restaurant for quite some time.

Duotian Fish Soup Noodles Restaurant 多田魚珍米線餐飲

After finishing dinner at Sushiholic, my friend and I were still hungry and decided to try out Duotian Fish Soup Noodles. The restaurant is located at the 1st Avenue plaza along with Fortune City, T&T Supermarket, Thai Son and Venice Garden. As for the food, the restaurant serves "build your own" noodles (like Deer Garden and Cattle Cafe), congee and clay pot rice, along with Hong Kong style cafe food.

When we walked in, the interior surprised us. The restaurant looks clean and is fairly large. In addition, the seating arrangements are not cramped. Not sure why but we were expecting a sort of run down Chinese restaurant. Furthermore, the staff was friendly!

ABC HK Cafe 愛彼茜餐室

RESTAURANT CLOSED

After finishing some appointments in Richmond, BF and I were stumped on what to have for lunch. Dim sum at Sun Sui Wah was an option but considering that it was around 2:45pm and the restaurant would be closing soon, we passed. A pet peeve of mine is when the staff starts to vacuum while I am still eating and even worse, hitting the table with the vacuum! Plus, I was in the mood for a less than $40.00 lunch rather than the $70.00-$80.00 range that it would have been for dim sum, considering the amount that we always order! So, after circling around Richmond, we both agreed that the food court at Aberdeen Centre was the best choice. However, before heading to the food court, I noticed ABC HK Cafe! The alluring menu posted outside as well as the lobster dishes drew us in.

The restaurant's interior is pretty clean, spacious and has a high ceiling as well as window wrapped walls. This is the nicest Hong Kong style cafe restaurant that I have ever been to! And not going to lie, I was pretty excited and could not wait to eat. Plus, I was starving (we actually had reservations for tea but cancelled because we needed real food).

ABC HK Cafe offers plenty of choices such as a create your own noodles resembling Deer Garden's, hot plates, sandwiches, Korean stone bowls, hot pot, a la carte and of course, lobster. It took us quite a while just to figure out what we wanted because the menu was sort of all over the place, despite the colourful and easy to read font.

Golden Oscar Cafe & Restaurant

I can choose anywhere to eat and I chose Oscar's, honestly. There are a few fine dining restaurants I have wanted to try for a while but I am not really in the mood to be disappointed these days. I only know of Golden Oscar because I came here in Grade.11 and it was my first official Hong Kong style cafe experience. I remember thinking, really? People just order one dish? You come here to eat fried rice and that's it? Why not go to the food court and get rice with a side of meat? Ughh baked rice or Chinese style pasta? What the

I have tried baked rice dishes before and it is not my thing. I love cheese and can eat any amount of cheese in one sitting (except swiss, I hate swiss cheese), but there is just something about rice baked with cheese that I do not like. Ever since I started blogging however, I have tried a lot of restaurants that I normally would not ("dirty" Chinese restaurants, noodle shops, pubs, BBT food, tapas) and actually enjoy most experiences, so I decided to try Oscar's willingly. Well… confession, I came here because it was a weekend and to avoid a busy restaurant.

After bickering back and forth to my friend numerous times about how I hate HK style cafes, he explained this type of restaurant to me in the most simplest way. A HK style cafe is like McDonalds, you get a drink, soup and a meat dish.. like a drink, fries and a burger. Why does the second option sound so much better? So when I told him I wanted to come here, he thought I was joking. Oscar's is a clean restaurant, where there are booth seating arrangements and plenty of tables. I like that the waitresses seat everyone at the larger booths too, no matter if you are here with two or more people.

Cattle Cafe 牛仔餐廳 : Vancouver location

Continuing with my noodle phase... Cattle Cafe! There are two locations in Burnaby, one in Vancouver and one in Richmond? Ever since they started popping out of no where in the last couple of years, my boyfriend has always wanted to try this place. Personally I cannot eat at hong kong style cafes because there is nothing I ever want to order. I would be a lot happier going to McDonalds' (seriously) than hong kong cafes. The only reason I suggested coming here is was because of my noodle phase.

My only complaint is the uncomfortable seating arrangements. I am 5'3, 110lbs and consider myself to have a big booty. Keeping my body frame in mind, the most awkward and uncomfortable thing happened. I had to squeeze through the tiny space between the tables and my ass would be on another persons table. WHY ARE THE SEATING ARRANGEMENTS SO TIGHT?! I hate restaurants who try to get as many tables as they can. Seriously my ass was practically on someones food and I felt so bad.

THE CHICKEN WINGS, CHINESE YAM SOUP, TOFU PUDDING, HONEYDEW SMOOTHIE, CRISPY SHELL SHRIMP, BLUEBERRY SMOOTHIE, BEEF SHORT RIBS AND ORIGINAL FISH SOUP

His drink is the HONEYDEW SMOOTHIE ($2.00) and my drink is the BLUEBERRY SMOOTHIE ($2.00). Muahaha lesson learned from Deer Garden, I asked for no sugar in my blueberry smoothie :). But instead they added syrup :(. My boyfriend's honeydew tasted really powdery, it was not too sweet and just tasted like too much powder.

The first dish is the CRISPY SHELL SHRIMP IN SPECIAL SEASONING BLEND ($3.99). I thought the salt inside the jar is unhygienic and really gross since it has been reused so many times. There are clumps of salt inside and the jar looks really sticky. I am not sure what their seasoning blend is but it tastes like just salt? The prawns are pretty much hard to eat and stuck on the skewers. They try to copy the dish from Hong Kong but in HK they are fresh and easy to eat.

The side of HOUSE SPECIAL GINGER DEEP FRIED WINGS ($1.99). The order comes with three pieces, they are not over deep fried and the inside is not dry or moist. I would pass unless I want wings.

The next dish is the GRAIN FED BEEF SHORT RIBS IN JAPANESE STYLE MUSTARD SAUCE WITH RICE ($11.99). For the price, it would have been nice if they added more vegetables since there are only five pieces of diced carrots and cucumber.  The japanese style mustard sauce tastes like a beef gravy and is not very good to me (probably since I am not used to it, keep in mind I usually do not like HK style cafes.. my boyfriend did not like it either and he likes HK style cafes though). For the grain fed beef short ribs, I feel like they used way too much meat tenderizer. Who uses meat tenderizer on short ribs? It must be a HK style cafe thing but I doubt it. The meat tenderizer pretty much ruined the beef ribs. I do not recommend this dish and consider it my lesson to stick to the usuals for HK style cafes.

My FRESH CHINESE YAM FISH SOUP WITH TAIWANESE VERMICELLI ($8.50), SLICED BEEF BRISKET ($INCLUDED), BASA FISH SLICE ($INCLUDED) and FRESH BEAN CURD ($1.25). The broth is a lot thicker and creamier than Deer Gardens'. I also think most people would prefer Cattle Cafes', but I like Deer Gardens' because the broth is lighter and I prefer that.

The SLICED BEEF BRISKET and BASA FISH SLICES. The fish slices are perfectly cooked, as in so good that you doubt if it is even cooked. I love that, but only when I do it myself. I think they did not have the intentions of making the fish like that, to the point where they would have risked it being raw. But oh well, it was cooked for me (I did doubt it a few times though). The sliced beef brisket is not chewy but is a bit tough.

His ORIGINAL FISH SOUP WITH VERMICELLI, JAPANESE BBQ PORK ($INCLUDED), ENOKI MUSHROOM ($INCLUDED), BASA FISH SLICE ($1.25) and HAM ($1.25). My boyfriend finds the broth flavourful and prefers it over Deer Gardens', but the toppings at Deer Garden are a lot better.

The HAM, JAPANESE BBQ PORK and BASA FISH SLICE. Usually japanese BBQ pork is tender and soft, but it is really tough, hard and chewy here. I would stick with the sliced beef brisket.

For desert, HOUSE BRAND SMOOTH TOFU PUDDING ($4.99). The tofu is properly made with a smooth texture, so no complaints.

MY THOUGHTS:
The fish broths are flavourful and creamy but I still prefer Deer Gardens' because of their lighter taste. I also enjoy Deer Gardens' more because they have flat noodles (I think the only reason I liked their noodle soup is because of the flat noodles) and better toppings. Asides from the noodle soups, the prawns and beef short ribs are not that great and kind of wasteful to order. Other then the food, the tight seating arrangements are pretty darn awkward too. For service, the girls are pretty nice and friendly but one dish was forgotten.

Food: 2.5/5
Service: 3/5
