I have mentioned before that I occasionally circle around streets or spend over an hour looking for a restaurant (to be honest, usually it is an hour and a half to two hours LOL). Why? Because I want to have a good meal! And am indecisive. So after driving up to Park Royal and going through the Capilano and Lonsdale area, my friend and I came back to Vancouver and agreed on a Mexican joint that is supposed to be popular… she claims there is always a line up! Plus, she is reliable and never falls for hyped restaurants. Moreover, Sal Y Limon hangs a banner declaring to be the winner for best tacos in Vancouver on Taco Wars!
Yeah… I do not even know what that is and honest to truth, it does not matter to me since many of my friends have already told me that this place is pretty good, way before they put up the banner! The Mexican joint is fairly small and customers order as well as pay at the counter, then grab their food. One of the most eye catching things would be their self serve bar, consisting of eight sauces(!), lime wedges, plastic cutlery and containers. Unfortuantely we did not try any of the sauces though since the food was flavourful enough. I will probably try some on my next visit though!
FISH TACO WITH CHEESE ($2.75).
The taco was quite wet and soggy, which does not even matter. Why? Because the housemade crema tastes amazing. The crema has a light mild spiciness and tangy faint sour cream taste, along with plenty of diced tomato and onions fused in the sauce. As for the fish, although not moist or dry, has a nice crunchy batter and tastes pretty good. I definitely want to come back to try the rest of their tacos!
CORDERO AL CILANTRO, LAMB MARINATED IN ONION AND CILANTRO SOPES, HURACHES ($8.75).
The sopes has shredded pieces of lamb, coleslaw, crema, jalapeño, and tomato sauce along with a hint of spiciness. Then, it is topped with nice square sized pieces of oaxaca. The fried masa also tastes crunchy and surprisingly very filling! Although the shredded lamb tastes chewy but has a pleasant gamey taste, the coleslaw provides a nice refreshing flavour and the cheese tastes firm with a springy texture.
QUESO Y POLLO PIBIL, CHEESE AND SLOW ROASTED CHICKEN QUESADILLA ($5.50) AND GUACAMOLE ($2.00).
The soup has a light vegetable broth with a good amount of rice and soft tasting potato. Although simple and generic, it is good enough for those who want soup. Plus, the soup does not taste salty.
COCHINITA PIBLI, SLOW ROASTED SPICE PORK ($8.50).
The burrito has a light tasty tomato sauce and a nice mild spiciness that builds up to a medium level, the jalapeños on the bottom were also a nice surprise. As for the filling, the pork tastes tender and has a flavourful roasted taste. In addition, the burrito holds up well and the tortilla never got soggy or wet.
- Friendly staff
- Above average eats
- All the items have at least a hint of spiciness
NEGATIVES
- Small place
- Apparently there are occasional line ups
- Not sure how the lamb tastes in general but it was mehh
- I think the plaza has less than ten parking spots! Good luck finding a spot during busier times LOL
LITTLE THINGS
- The food was enjoyable because the sauces taste light as well as simple, but also flavourful. Furthermore, the fact that everything has at least a hint of spiciness and extra condiments were not needed, made the food quite tasty
- So much better than La Taqueria
Food: 3.5/5
Service: 5/5 (N/A but friendly staff!)
