Yu Xiang Yuan Restaurant 豫湘園

REVISIT POST ON YU XIANG YUAN 豫湘園 [HERE]

A restaurant I wanted to visit for a while is Yu Xiang Yuan on Fraser Street. On the nights of Taste Good Wonton Seafood and Golden House Seafood, BF did not want to stop here because of the "meh" looking exterior. Although if talking about a restaurants' exterior, Golden House Seafood's is equivalent to here as well as most Chinese late night restaurants, so bad argument on his end. Yu Xiang Yuan is known for serving fresh housemade noodles which is also what I have been craving for! The restaurant has a homey vibe and is somewhat small, with only ten tables and two larger tables for eight to ten people. Luckily on a Saturday evening the restaurant was not very busy, however, I would expect long line ups in the future.

XIAO LONG BAO, FRIED PORK WITH GREEN PEPPER, DRAGGING NOODLES WITH BEEF AND VEGETABLES IN SOUP, CHICKEN WITH SPECIAL HOT SAUCE, BEEF PANCAKE AND STEAMED PORK AND CHINESE BOK CHOY DUMPLINGS.

CHICKEN WITH SPECIAL HOT SAUCE ($8.95). This is a popular sichuan dish also known as the "mouth watering chicken" and is served cold. The chicken thigh and leg is served in a delicious flavourful chilli sauce which has a settled spiciness and is topped with crushed nuts as well as green onion. The chicken tastes tender as well as juicy and the sauce tastes extremely flavourful as well as spicy, definitely properly made. There are dishes that taste good because of the spiciness and those that taste good as well as spicy, this is the second one. The only other restaurant I have tried this was at Oriental Dumpling King and theirs taste bland. For those who are fans of the mouth watering chicken, this is a must order!

FRIED PORK WITH GREEN PEPPER ($10.95) + STEAMED RICE ($1.00).
The pork belly is thinly sliced, has a nice pan fried taste and tastes tender, flavourful as well as spicy. Having tried at least ten kinds of this dish at different restaurants, this is by far the best one. The dish also has a large portion of pork while most restaurants have a larger portion of vegetables than meat. As for the slices of pepper, they taste crunchy and spicy.

DRAGGING NOODLES WITH BEEF AND VEGETABLES IN SOUP ($6.95).
The soup tastes clear as well as healthy and has a rich flavourful pork and beef broth. My choice of noodle is the dragging noodle which tastes fresh and soft with a slight chewiness. As for the meat, rather than chunks of beef brisket, slices of beef shank is used. The slices of beef shank taste extremely tender, tasty and melts in the mouth. Also, the cilantro provides a nice refreshing taste.

BEEF PANCAKE ($3.95).
The pancake tastes crispy and has a beef with green onion taste. We ordered this by accident and are not a fans, however this is properly made.

STEAMED PORK AND CHINESE BOK CHOY DUMPLINGS ($6.95). The dumplings are Northern Chinese style and has a thicker than usual skin, but not as thick as Taiwanese dumplings. The filling tastes moist, juicy and flavourful but unfortunately the skin dried up a bit too fast (which can be avoided for those who eat them fast!).

XIAO LONG BAO
STEAMED DUMPLINGS, PORK WITH GINGER AND SAVOURY SAUCE ($4.50). The XLBs taste extremely juicy and delicious. The meat has a good amount of fatty pork and tastes smooth as well as flavourful, with a nice strong hint of ginger. Also, the skin has a nice thinness but again like the dumplings, dries out too fast.
