Moulin Rouge

Tom & Jerry's has been replaced by Moulin Rouge, which is a bit of an odd name considering the type of restaurant… but oh well. Looking for a late night dinner, we remembered that Moulin Rouge offers nothing over $10.00 and were curious to see if the restaurant is better compared to the former Tom & Jerry's. After taking a look at the menu, every item as well as the description along with the prices are exactly the same as Tom & Jerry's. Perhaps the new owners and management decided to keep everything the same?

Well, what is not the same is the interior. The restaurant has plenty of booth seating arrangements and even a stage. However, something that has not changed is the red carpet. For a restaurant to spend so much time renovating the whole place, why not change the carpet? The carpet is old as well as dirty compared to the rest of the interior. Why not go all the way?

I wanted to write another Pelican Seafood Restaurant post as my closure since the spot prawn season is over, and I no longer will be visiting every few days a week.

We ordered the pumpkin and crab meat soup, winter melon with dried scallops, yeung chow fried rice, cream and butter sauce crab, and steamed tilapia.

The pumpkin and crab meat soup ($12.98) was different than the first time. The first time we ordered it, the pumpkin taste was so strong and it felt weird with the crab meat. Tonight the pumpkin taste was a lot lighter and I enjoyed it more. The first time I had to forcefully drink a bowl, today I was able to drink it slowly and it was not that bad. My boyfriend enjoys it though (last time as well), he says lately he has noticed more chinese restaurants have this kind of soup. I never noticed.. or like it. But I am weird like that, even chinese corn soup is "meh" to me. There were also some baby shrimps inside today too, which I do not think they had the first time.

The butter and cream sauce crab ($11.99/lb) was good. It always is. Flavourful, yummy, never over cooked.

The yeung chow fried rice ($12.98) is always good as well, very consistent.

The steamed tilapia ($19.98) my boyfriend ate to himself, I am not really a tilapia fan. It always tastes the same to me. It has never been over cooked or bad here.

The winter melon with dry scallops ($14.98) was a bit too saucy for me. I like it more when you have the slices of melon and the dry scallops placed on top so you eat it with a spoon because you do not want to waste a drop of sauce. I still ate about 90% of it to myself and enjoyed it of course.

It is a little past 1am, and I am still sad about no spot prawns. My 2 mango puddings were temporary happiness which lasted about 5 minutes. I keep thinking to myself how do I go from 2lbs of spot prawns to 0? I thought the season ends near the end of July. 

Overall Pelican is a solid place for chinese food and they are always consistent. They are open late night too so it is pretty convenient. Here are more photos from previous Pelican eats.

Pelican is one of BF and I's favourite Chinese restaurants, we like to come here after 9:00pm when the restaurant is less busy. A few years ago when I was obsessed with Pelican's peking duck, I was here two to three times a week for it. This year however has been about the seafood. I stopped taking photos because we literally order the same thing over and over. Below are a few photo frames from this month of what we usually order.

SPICY EGGPLANT WITH GARLIC HOTPOT, CRAB SOUP WITH PORK, SAUTEED BEEF AND BROCCOLI, CREAM AND BUTTER SAUCE CRAB, 1LB SPOT PRAWNS AND MANGO PUDDING.

PUMPKIN AND CRAB MEAT SOUP, MANGO PUDDING, COCONUT TAPIOCA SOUP, WINTER MELON WITH DRIED SCALLOPS, CREAM AND BUTTER SAUCE CRAB, YEUNG CHOW FRIED RICE AND STEAMED TILAPIA.

CRAB AND FISH MAW SOUP, YEUNG CHOW FRIED RICE, STEAMED BROCCOLI, MANGO PUDDING, 1LB STEAMED SPOT PRAWNS WITH GARLIC, 2LB STEAMED SPOT PRAWNS AND WINE CHICKEN. I remember this dinner and thinking that I can finish 3lbs of spot prawns since I can eat a 3lb crab to myself, but I was wrong haha.

CRAB SOUP WITH PORK, WINTER MELON WITH DRIED SCALLOPS, 2LB STEAMED SPOT PRAWNS, CREAM AND BUTTER SAUCE CRAB AND STEAMED TILAPIA.

STEAMED TILAPA, PEKING DUCK, WINTER MELON WITH DRIED SCALLOPS, MANGO PUDDING AND COCONUT TAPIOCA WITH TARO SOUP.

Since I was getting sick of our usual dishes, I wanted to try the peking duck again because BF has never tried it before. Plus, I was obsessed over them a couple of years ago. I feel like my photos seem boring and to make them more interesting, I brought my Kinder Surprise Madagascar penguin toy to join. I was actually pissed because I opened 11 other Kinder Surprise Eggs which were supposed to be a part of the Madagascar train, but I only got this one.
