Spicy Legend 紅錦天

RESTAURANT IS NOW CLOSED

Spicy Legend is an all you can eat hot pot restaurant on Kingsway, next to the busy Congee Noodle King. Oddly enough, the idea of coming here has never been welcomed by anyone that I know (why?!). Also, I always assume that since Congee Noodle King gets random long line ups, a lot of customers would pass and walk next door to Spicy Legend because I know I have wanted to many times. So, finally after a few years, one of my friends caved and decided to try the restaurant with me. On a Saturday evening, the restaurant was quite empty which I prefer, but many find it "odd" or claim there must be something wrong with the restaurant. The restaurant's interior is very spacious and the chairs as well as tables stick to a red and black theme.

After walking up to the waitress, she tells us where to sit and hands us an order sheet. The menu has a large  variety of dishes that are not normally offered at hot pot restaurants, such as frog, rabbit, and a lot of cooked dishes. Although unfortunately, those dishes are crossed out so ordering them was no longer an option. Spicy Legend does have a few items such as cauliflower, rice cake, chicken heart, chicken and duck gizzard, and pork membrane for those who are interested.

ADULT $18.95 CHILDREN (4-12) $14.95
BROTH $7.95-$8.95, $10.95 OR $2.00 MORE FOR LARGE
POP $1.50

HALF NON SPICY AND HALF SPICY, SICHUAN STYLE SPICY BASE ($7.95).
SESAME OIL, SESAME PASTE, SALTY PASTE, AND CILANTRO ($0.50).
Spicy Legend provides two hot pot sizes, small and large. Small runs at $7.95 - $8.95, and has two higher priced soup bases at $10.95 (sichuan green pepper and tea plant mushroom). Large is priced at $2.00 more. The non spicy soup base has a light chicken broth taste, and a slice of tomato, some wolf berries and a date. For the half spicy soup base, mild, medium, spicy, or very spicy are the available options. This is the only hot pot restaurant (I know of) that provides the option of which level of spiciness the customer prefers on the order sheet. We chose medium spicy because the waitress sort of hinted and insisted that we pass on spicy. The broth tastes medium spicy and has a nice strong settled spiciness.

SLICED LAMB AND SLICED BEEF RIB EYE.
The lamb tastes tender and is what it is. For the beef rib eye, this is the most tender and flavourful rib eye I ever had at any hot pot restaurant (including Landmark). The rib eye tastes better than Top Gun's "top grade beef" and "angus beef".

SLICED BEEF, SPINACH, CROWN DAISY (TONG HO), ENOKI MUSHROOM, CAULIFLOWER, TOFU, AND DRIED TOFU SKIN.
The beef tastes stiff and chewy, definitely choose the rib eye slices. The vegetables are throughly washed and everything tastes like what it is. I like the dried tofu skin at Spicy Legend over Cattle Hot Pot and Fu Lin because the tofu skin tastes like soft tofu skin, rather than the stiffer kind. Also, the slices of rib eye here taste a lot better than Cattle Hot Pot's too.

MUSSELS, FISH SLICES, PRAWNS, AND DUMPLINGS.
We did not get a chance to try the dumplings.

POSITIVES
- Line ups should not be an issue
- Spacious and comfortable restaurant (ventilation could be stronger)
- Friendly staff
- Cheaper soup base option for two to three people ($7.95)
- Rib eye tastes good
- Nice spicy broth rather than an oily bland tasting soup base

NEGATIVES
- Miserable looking staff but once you talk to them they are really friendly
- Have to ask or walk up for service
- Dishwasher could improve
- Menu is a bit limited (lots of vegetable options though!)

LITTLE THINGS
- Open until 12:00am
- Cheaper than Top Gun
- Soup bases taste better than Little Sheep Mongolian
- Dishes are placed on carts rather than the table for a more comfortable dining space

Food: 2.5/5
Service: 2.5/5
