Hon's Wun Tun House 漢記 : New Westminster location

POST ON HON'S WUN TUN HOUSE AT COQUITLAM [HERE]

Ah… Hon's Wun Tun House, a childhood memory of mine; fighting over pot stickers with my sister and as a family of four, ordering three dozen LOL. Around half a year ago, I tried re-living my memory of Hon's at the Coquitlam location. However, neither the pot stickers were not very good or the other dishes.

So, I decided to visit the location in New Westminster because I remember coming here a couple of years ago and the food was definitely a lot better than Coquitlam's. The restaurant's interior is fairly simple, tables and chairs set up like a fast food joint.

SHRIMP AND PORK WUN-TUN IN SOUP ($2.75).
The soup has a generic chicken broth flavour and is neither salty nor bland. In addition, the wontons are pretty traditional, not too small or big. The wontons have a decent amount of pork as well as shrimp and although slightly chewy, the meat does not taste too stiff.

STIR FRIED VERMCELLI WITH MIXED MEATS ($8.25).
The vermicelli has a light soy sauce base and a decent amount of stir fried pork, along with barbecue pork. If anything, the stir fry is slightly oily but asides from that, the vermicelli is pretty generic and there are no complaints.

PAN FRIED PORK GYOZA, DOZEN ($6.25).
The only reason that I am here! The pot stickers are greasy like always but yenno what, I never care. However, despite the golden brown appearance, the pot stickers only have a slight crispiness. Fortunately though, the pot stickers taste moist as well as average, and the highlight is definitely the pink vinegar.

SWEET CORN SOUP WITH SHREDDED CHICKEN ($4.75).
The corn soup does not have much taste and resembles a watered down can of Cream of Corn, with a heavy unpleasant MSG flavour (I rarely mention MSG unless needed and am not always against MSG). Also, although the soup does not taste very good, there is a decent amount of diced chicken meat and the broth does not taste salty. For less than $5.00, is there anything to complain about?

BRAISED ROCK COD SLICES WITH BEAN CURD AND PORK JULIENNES ($9.95).
The hot pot is the best dish that we ordered! There is a good amount of juicy bean curd, tender tasting basa and a few slices of barbecue pork. Furthermore, the sauce has a light oyster sauce flavour along with a nice thickened consistency. However to some, the sauce may taste bland. I actually quite like it, flavourful but not salty.

STEAMED LOBSTER AND PRAWN GYOZA ($6.95).
I always prefer ordering some sort of seafood when I go for Chinese, and the lobster gyoza it was! The dumplings actually have a pretty good amount of lobster meat; however, the meat tastes overcooked, bland as well as stiff. Also, the dumplings have an extremely strong white pepper flavour which is sort of a waste, considering that the gyoza has a lot of potential.

STIR-FRIED MUSSELS IN BLACK BEAN AND GARLIC SAUCE ($11.95).
The mussels taste poached then topped with black bean sauce, rather than stir fried for a fused together flavour. As for the black bean and garlic sauce, it does not taste salty but does taste bland which I am fine with (considering that I like simpler dishes). In addition, the mussels do resemble a dish served from an all you can eat buffet, which may not be pleasant for most.

TWO BARBECUED MEAT PLATTER, SOY CHICKEN AND BARBECUE DUCK ($8.95).
The cut of the chicken is the leg which has a light soy sauce flavour and tastes tender, without tasting salty. As for the duck, the cut is a part of the leg and tastes generic, not salty.

POSITIVES
- Better than Hon's in Coquitlam

NEGATIVES
- Average to below average food
- Food is pretty greasy, even for a Chinese restaurant
- There are better restaurants nearby with similar prices

LITTLE THING
- Post on Hon's Wun Tun House in Coquitlam [here]
- Good enough for those who know what to order, but I rather make a fifteen minute drive to any other Chinese restaurant on Kingsway Street

Food: 2.5/5
Service: 2.5/5
