Vancouver’s got no game when it comes to Chicago style deep dish pizza, like literally. There may be a couple of pizzerias offering pizza similar to deep dish, but their variations are just a higher crust. Not necessarily more toppings. So with a quick Google on our next door neighbour Washington, I managed to discover Fat Pie Pizza! I have to disclose despite never tried deep dish pizza, it really looked like something I would fall in love with. And I have always wanted to try it ever since I was a little kid.
Fat Pie Pizza is located in Bellingham and specializes in Chicago deep dish, Detroit square pan, Brooklyn New York thin style, and Pan Pizzas. In addition to pizza, they offer pastas and sandwiches.
To start off, we ordered the fried beef ravioli served with tasty and hearty marinara. The crispy ravioli tasted mealy, and on the dry side however.
MEATBALLS ($7.00)
Next up, on the table are housemade meatballs in more of that tasty marinara topped with Romano and served with rosemary focaccia. The meatballs were well seasoned and flavours were on point, but the meat was on the tougher side and dry. The highlight was definitely the delicious fresh and fluffy rosemary focaccia! Oh man, it was great.
CHICAGO STYLE DEEP DISH PIZZA, REGULAR SIZE ($22.00)
Now onto the main event, the Chicago deep dish pizza arrived! This was the regular size and fortunately we were able to choose half and half, so we went for half ‘57 Packard and half Mo Town. The deep dish exhibited a crispy and extremely flaky crust throughout, similar to biscuit dough and the bottom held up very well (crust did not get soggy).
The ‘57 Packard consisted of tender roasted chicken, flavourful bacon, fresh basil, caramelized onions, Gorgonzola, mozzarella and creamy pesto. It was a really creamy pizza with a touch of sweetness from the caramelized onions. As for the Mo Town, it consisted of sausage, pepperoni, bacon, smoked ham, mozzarella, bolognese and marinara. This was a heartier and more traditional pizza. It was also easy on the sodium, which I appreciated considering all the meat lover toppings.
Fat Pie Pizza overall did not disappoint when it came to pizza. I love how we were able to choose half/half as well and I wish we had more stomach room to try their other pizzas! I will definitely be back, just too bad it is almost 2 hours away from me.
POSITIVES
- Buttery and flaky crust
- Lots of filling in the pizza
- Rewards program
NEGATIVES
- Appetizers we ordered were meh
- Not a big deal, but happy hour prices were not applied lol
