FIRST POST ON ROSE GARDEN [HERE]
Being somewhat still sick and craving for seafood, soup, and congee, why not Rose Garden?... Aside from the fact that my last visit kind of annoyed me. It has been two months since my last visit and I think I have banned long them enough, plus I prefer dining at their emptier restaurant compared to busier places such as Kwan Luck or Congee Noodle King.
The restaurant has two sections, one for groups of six or more, and the other for groups of less than four. Usually the floor has used napkins and/or food fallen from tables, but this time the carpet was clean.
PORK WITH MUSTARD GREEN AND PRESERVED EGGS SOUP, CLAMS IN LEMON GRASS BROTH, COMPLIMENTARY CONGEE, CREAM AND BUTTER SAUECE LOBSTER, PORK WITH MUSTARD GREEN AND PRESERVED EGGS SOUP, DEEP FRIED SILVER FISH, DEEP FRIED QUAIL AND BEAN LEAVES WITH TWO KINDS OF PRESERVED EGGS.
PORK WITH MUSTARD GREEN AND PRESERVED EGGS SOUP ($10.99). The soup has a light rich tofu mustard green vegetable broth taste and is not salty. There is a good amount of mustard green vegetables, pork, tofu, and bonus slices of geoduck? One of the tables ordered geoduck and they had it sashimi style. We thought because they couldn't serve the inside part of the geoduck, they threw it into our soup... Haha but oh, 10 minutes later, the waitress grabs the soup and says it was given to us by mistake. Well actually, the Chinese way is "that's not yours" and grabs it away. I felt kind of embarrassed considering I should have realized it wasn't ours because I didn't see any preserved eggs but in my defence, I didn't order the soup or know there was supposed to be any preserved eggs :P. I am 100% sure about the next sentence I am going to type. The waitress took back the same soup (we had 3 bowls in total), brought it to the kitchen, the cooks added more broth, and served it to the correct customers. Yeahhhhh.... I wouldn't be too pleased if it was the other way around because you can tell how much geoduck is missing, and what if we drank from the same bowl? Not very sanitary.
3 1/4LB CREAM AND BUTTER SAUCE LOBSTER ($13.80/lb). The cream and butter sauce is properly made and tastes creamy without tasting too buttery. The sauce has a nice consistency, not too thin or thick, and there is a fair amount of sauce. The lobster is not overcooked and has a nice bounce.
PORK WITH MUSTARD GREEN AND PRESERVED EGGS SOUP ($10.99). The new correct soup tastes more like hot water and mustard green vegetables, there is no broth taste. Chinese restaurants have a big pot of broth with bones that they use for soup, so I am not sure why they used water. With the ingredient of preserved eggs, there should be a taste of something rather nothing. The soup is not worth $11.00, especially since it is a cheap house soup to make.
DEEP FRIED SILVER FISH WITH PEPPERY SALT ($5.99). The silver fishies are not over deep fried like last time, and they have the usual pepper salt chilli taste.
DEEP FRIED QUAIL WITH PEPPERY SALT ($5.99). The quail tastes tender, not dry or over deep fried, and has a nice flavourful pepper salt chilli taste.
CLAMS IN LEMON GRASS BROTH ($5.99). The clams taste fresh in a tasty clear lemon grass broth. There were only three dead clams and for the price it is not bad.
PLAIN CONGEE (COMPLIMENTARY WITH ORDER OF 4 DISHES). I asked for no MSG and salt since I prefer the bland white congee taste. The congee has a somewhat thickened consistency and sort of has the flavourless yummy congee taste but it is not really fully there. If I wanted to be picky, they did not fill it to the top this time.
BEAN LEAVES WITH TWO KINDS OF PRESERVED EGGS ($6.99). The dish comes with preserved and salted eggs, and the broth has a light clear chicken broth taste. The broth here is more flavourful than our soup, odd. The bean leaves are semi fresh and this is a refreshing dish. I am not really a fan of the preserved eggs with my vegetables though (personal preference).
POSITIVES
- Seafood is consistent
- Lucky night, we got plate changes, once (but hey, at least we didn't need to ask!)
NEGATIVES
Average eats
- Overcharged for the lobster (meh, not surprised). We didn't want a 3 3/4lb for a reason (claws are too big) but if we are going to be charged for it, might as well have taken it
- First dish took 45 minutes to come out and the rest came slowly one by one. Not sure why since this never happened before
- We ordered first but every table had their dishes before us (same order like ours btw)?
LITTLE THINGS
- First post on Rose Garden [here]
- After revisiting, I think Kwan Luck's dishes taste better and they have better serviceFood: 2.5/5
