After burgers at the Famous Warehouse, I met up with BF and wanted to go to Burger's Etc which we could not find. After driving around on Hastings, we agreed to try Wah Lun's.
Is it weird that I prefer empty restaurants? The restaurant's interior is actually somewhat nicely decorated, despite the ripped table cloths and dirty chairs. Seeing how there is so much space in the restaurant, I was confused why they gave us a table in the middle which was wobbly and half slanted. Usually I do not mind, but it was really slanted. If there was no table cloth, a cup could slide right off.
After asking if we could sit at another table, they gave us an MJ table. Really? MJ tables at a restaurant? If it is for dim sum, I do not mind.. but for dinner? Meh, I sucked it up and had dinner at this squeaky table.
MINCED CHICKEN WITH CREAMY CORN SOUP, WHITE RICE, RED BEAN SOUP WITH TAPIOCA, STEAMED TILAPIA, PORK WITH LEEK IN SPICY SZECHUAN STYLE, DEEP FRIED TOFU WITH PEPPERY SALT, CRAB AND LOBSTER IN CREAM AND BUTTER SAUCE.
MINCED CHICKEN WITH CREAM CORN SOUP ($?). The soup has the usual corn soup taste and is not salty, but is a bit heavy on corn starch. If I wanted to be picky, there is way too much chicken and not enough soup. The chicken tastes chewy, but does not taste old.
CRAB AND LOBSTER IN CREAM AND BUTTER SAUCE ($28.80). I remember raving about cheap crab and/or lobster specials before (Venice Garden, Fortune City, Tung Sing Chin) and this is one of them. Usually restaurants with a set price on seafood or a special, has smaller crabs and lobsters which are around 2lb. At Wah Lun, the crabs are smaller at 1.8lb and they have chick lobsters (1lb). If I knew that, I would have preferred not getting the special. The cream and butter sauce is properly made, and could have been more flavourful as well as creamy, but it is not bland. I think they might make better ginger and green onion sauce since I saw them advertising it on the walls.
PORK WITH LEEK AND SPICY IN SZECHUAN STYLE ($13.99). The pork toro is tender with a nice snappy chew and tastes medium spicy. I was kind of expecting a pan fried dish, but the hotpot is tasty. Underneath the pork is just chinese lettuce.
BOWL OF WHITE RICE ($1.50).
2LB STEAMED TILAPIA ($10.99/lb). The steamed tilapia is what it is and not overcooked.
DEEP FRIED TOFU WITH PEPPERY SALT ($9.99). The deep fried tofu is my favourite dish here. The tofu is nicely deep fried with a slight crispiness and there are no soggy pieces. If the dish was spicy, it would have been better. I definitely recommend this if you are a fan, plus it is not too greasy and I like the small cubes. The small cube sized tofu actually made me think, imagine a blog with a girl who writes about food and how her lipstick holds up. IE if it's hard to eat and what types of food would make her lipstick smudge? I can imagine a post about her raving for these because of the tiny bite sized cubes.
COMPLIMENTARY RED BEAN SOUP WITH TAPIOCA. The red bean soup is a bit watery and does not really have a sweetness or red bean taste.
POSITIVES
- Safe restaurant to try
- Average eats
- Nothing is slightly or overly salty
- Deep fried tofu is perfect minus the lack of spiciness
NEGATIVES
- There are better Chinese restaurants
LITTLE THINGS
- Waitress is friendlier than the owner
