Top Gun Hot Pot is a part of the Top Gun chain which includes Kingsway Sushi, Richmond Sushi (my favourite AYCE Japanese restaurant), Top Gun J&C and Garden City Hot Pot. Top Gun Hot Pot is located in Crystal Mall and I think the restaurant is the priciest AYCE hot pot joint. The restaurant
has always been used to be one of my favourites for AYCE because of their sauce cart, comfortable seating arrangements as well as cleanliness, and not sure as of when but Top Gun has a deluxe as well as regular menu now. Most of the differences are, the deluxe menu offers salmon sashimi, hokkigai, angus beef, top grade beef and quail eggs.
The restaurant is fairly large as well as spacious and has one of the most comfortable seatings for a hot pot restaurant. Top Gun Hot Pot has a large amount of booth seating available and quite a few tables for larger parties of eight to ten. I definitely recommend reservations if you are picky and prefer a booth seat (like me).
DELUXE $27.97 CHILD (5-9) $16.95, ADULT $21.95 CHILD (5-9) $12.95
BROTH $9.95, POP $2.25
SOUP COMBO, PORK BONE & PEPPER SOUP AND SZECHUAN SPICY SOUP ($9.95). SATAY SAUCE, PEANUT SAUCE, SOYA SAUCE, AND WASABI. The pork bone & pepper broth has a flavourful pork bone taste, and the szechuan spicy broth tastes medium spicy.
CHINESE MUSHROOMS, ENOKI MUSHROOMS, PUMPKIN, CORN, DEEP FRIED CHINESE DOUGHNUT, SPINACH AND TONG HO. PRAWNS, TOFU SKIN, MUSSELS, QUAIL EGGS, FISH SLICES, AND DRIED BEAN CURD STICK.
To start, the mutton as well as pork cheeks taste generic, not chewy and quite tasty. Following is the angus slices which taste lean as well as tender and the top grade beef which tastes fattier but chewier. The angus slices taste a lot better than the top grade beef. Is it worth a $6.00 difference for the angus beef? For me it is but to most, the rest of the meats are good enough.
CURRY FISH BALLS, HOKKIGAI AND SALMON SASHIMI.
The fish balls have a light mild curry fish ball taste. As for the sashimi, the hokkigai has a chewy snappy texture as well as a slight hint of sweetness, and the salmon tastes fresh as well as creamy and fatty.
DEEP FRIED SQUID AND DEEP FRIED CHICKEN'S DRUMETTE.
The deep fried squid is lightly battered and tastes crispy as well as tender with a nice snap, not over fried or chewy. Next, the deep fried chicken tastes dry and has a thick crunchy batter, I would not order them again.
The dumpling has pork, chinese mushroom, bamboo shoot and prawn.
The mango pudding tastes slightly sweet, lacks a mango taste and tastes more watered down compared to Kingsway Sushi's and Richmond Sushi's (no mango jello pieces in the pudding too!). Next, the coconut pudding has a slight coconut taste and does not taste bland. And last, the goji berry is the highlight. The pudding has a strong flavourful refreshing wolf berry taste and tastes slightly sweet, definitely one of the better jellys.
- Spacious and comfortable restaurant
- Service can be improved (no rude waitresses but not very attentive or observant either)
- Priciest AYCE hot pot restaurant (that I know of)
- Priciest canned pop at an AYCE restaurant ($2.25/CAN)
- No more sauce cart!
- Crystal Mall parking lot
- One of the few hot pot restaurants that actually mentions the soup base is not included in the AYCE price
- Is the deluxe menu worth it for an additional $6.00?
- If in Burnaby, I rather come here than Little Sheep Mongolian
