Golden Swan Restaurant 金天鵝海鮮酒家

ALASKAN KING CRAB POST AT GOLDEN SWAN [HERE]

A couple of years ago, my friend and I would frequently visit Golden Swan for dim sum every few days a week. However, our more than weekly dim sum visits came to an end when she starting choosing Dai Tung out of convenience (btw Dai Tung sucks!). Since BF and I have never tried Golden Swan together, I thought it would be a good chance to revisit the restaurant after a couple of years. Golden Swan is one of the very few restaurants that still offers push carts during dim sum. Also, diners can order off the menu as well.

SMALL $3.75 MEDIUM $4.35 LARGE $4.95 SPECIAL $5.65 KITCHEN $7.25

STEAMED BLACK BEAN SAUCE CHICKEN FEET ($4.35).
The presentation looks a bit… gloomy, and a couple of black beans could have possibly made the dish look visually better. The chicken feet tastes moist as well as tender, and slightly a bit above average. Also, as appreciated, does not taste overly saucy or salty.

STEAMED MELON WITH DRY SCALLOPS ($4.95).
The paste tastes stiff with a somewhat slight shrimpy flavour, and the melon tastes refreshing. However, the scallops are hard as well as crusted.

BEEF CREPES ($4.95).
The rice roll tastes soft and the beef tastes tender. I am not a fan of these but BF likes them.

GLASS BOTTLE OF COCA COLA ($3.00).
Despite wishing fresh juice was available, I like the glass bottles of Coca Cola because sometimes fountain pop can taste flat.

STEAMED SHRIMP DUMPLINGS ($4.95).
Each dumpling includes three to four baby shrimps, which is a nice change compared to the usual two large sized prawns chopped. As for the taste, the dumplings are juicy as well as bouncy, and the slightly thick skin is not that much of a big deal.

PRESERVED EGG AND SALTY PORK CONGEE ($5.65).
I am not a fan of salted pork and some restaurants use the term "salted pork" when it is just regular pork, and fortunately Golden Swan is one of them. The congee has shredded pork as well as slices of preserved egg, topped with green onion and Chinese pepper. The consistency has a nice creaminess and tastes smooth, not watery.

DEEP FRIED TARO DUMPLING ($4.35).
The batter could have been more flaky and is also heavy on the oil. As for the filling, it tastes average and is not bad or anything special.

STEWED PORK HOCK WITH EGG AND SWEET VINEGAR ($7.25).

The waitress made the dish look so good as she was pouring the sauce. Unfortunately though, the sauce tastes extremely sweet and has too much brown sugar, which created the consistency of maple syrup. As for the ingredients, the egg tastes like plastic as well as rubbery, and the meat tastes chewy, dry as well as rubbery too.

TOFU PUDDING ($5.75).
The tofu pudding could have been served hot rather than luke warm and the texture is a bit thick, as if too much powder was added. As for the ginger syrup, the ginger was on the weak side and there was only a taste of sweetened syrup.

EGG TARTS ($4.35).
Luckily for us, the egg tarts are fresh out of the oven! The crust has a nice flakiness and the filling tastes smooth, slightly sweet and delicious.

POSITIVES
- Average eats

NEGATIVES
- Parking lot is small
- Typical hard to get service during dim sum
- Blahh, nasty pork hock and marinaded eggs
- We were seated by the washroom doors and a restaurant should never have tables there. If there is no space, a restaurant should not even put a table there (worst table issue would still be at Kirin Downtown, a couple was sitting facing the wall!)

LITTLE THINGS
- Whoops, we ordered an eggplant with stuffed paste and I must have forgotten to take a photo of it. All I remember was a waitress pouring so much sauce over it and I did not like that. You know the restaurant is just "meh" if you forget the dishes you ordered!
