HON'S WUN TUN HOUSE AT NEW WESTMINSTER POST [HERE]
Who does not know the restaurant Hon's? Seriously. I remember coming here when I was a young child, and in my preteen years, the restaurant had their own clothing line along with cups and water bottles! Around a couple of years ago, my friend and I made the visit to Hon's because neither of us have been here for at least fifteen years. We ordered a lot that day and none of the food was really good… so when my friend wanted to revisit the location in Coquitlam, I was pretty hesitant. Also, the pot stickers which is pretty much the highlight of Hon's were not even that good! Although I do believe that Hon's has been catering to the Western clientele in the last five to six years, the food was still not very good. Plus, Hon's is known as a fast food joint rather than a family restaurant like before. Hon's at Coquitlam has an open kitchen and a separate smaller kitchen for take out as well as pick up orders, which is also the side where wontons and stewed dishes are served. The restaurant's interior resembles a food court and the tables are pretty close to each other, although there are a few single tables on the side.
CURRY BEEF BRISKET, WUN-TON SOUP, STEASMED RICE, BARBECUE MEATS (DUCK, ROASTED PORK, SOY CHICKEN), BEEF POT STICKERS, DEEP FRIED EGGPLANT AND CHICKEN POT STICKERS.
CURRY BEEF BRISKET WITH POTATO ($7.98).
The beef brisket could have been stewed longer and tastes really chewy, although there is a mild curry taste and does not taste salty.
WUN-TUN SHRIMP AND MEAT DUMPLING IN SOUP ($5.49). The wontons taste very stiff and are pre-cooked rather than cooked to order (this may be the only location that pre-cooks). For the soup, the broth has a light chicken broth taste and does not taste salty, however, this is probably the worst Hon's location for wontons.
DEEP FRIED EGGPLANTS TOPPED WITH SPICY ROCK AND SALT GARLIC ($11.50).
Although the eggplant tastes moist and is sliced in nice big slices, the batter is too crunchy as well as greasy. My friend prefers smaller slices but I thought it was fine.
THREE MEAT PLATTERS, BARBECUE DUCK, ROASTED PORK AND SOY CHICKEN ($10.50).
"Hey can you check if the roasted pork looks good? I'm craving for some so BAD!".... my friend says it looks pretty good. Well, that was a lie. The roasted pork has soggy skin and the cut is too fatty, as in not edible, not the good kind of fatty. The packaged day old roasted pork from T&T even tastes better than this, 10x better. Next, the barbecue duck does not taste very flavourful and the soy chicken tastes alright (not salty like T&Ts). The problem seems to be that the barbecue meats have been sitting out for too long, or not enough people order them.
BEEF POT STICKERS, DOZEN ($6.55).
I think around four years ago, I ordered some pot stickers from New Westminster's location and they were pretty good. Last year when I came with my friend, they sucked and the ones today are not that great either. The pot stickers could have been pan fried more and the skin tastes soggy.
CHICKEN POT STICKERS, HALF A DOZEN ($3.50).
Funny that I complained about the beef pot stickers because these are barely pan fried! I thought Hon's is supposed to be known for their pot stickers?POSITIVES
