Kirin Seafood Restaurant 麒麟海鮮酒家 : Richmond location

Kirin can be considered a "fine dining" Chinese restaurant with higher prices and above average service. Also, the Richmond location has the nicest foyer out of every Kirin in my opinion. The foyer is spacious as well as comfortable, and I am a sucker for brick walls.

However, the interior of the restaurant looks average compared to other Kirin locations. The restaurant is spacious with comfortable seating arrangements, and private rooms are available for larger parties.

COCA COLA ($2.00) AND FRESH WATERMELON JUICE ($4.50).

CRAB CLAW AND PREMIER BAMBOO PITH SOUP ($9.90/BOWL).
The soup consists of one sliced salted ham, three pieces of bamboo piths, two baby bok choys and two snow crab claws. Furthermore, the soup has a light clear chicken broth taste but is nothing special and tastes average. I was expecting something a lot better.

BRAISED SQUAB ($17.80).
The skin has a nice crispiness and the meat tastes tender as well as tasty. In addition, although the squab is not necessarily dry, it could of tasted a lot juicier. As for the price, it is pricey for what it is and Sun Sui Wah's squab tastes a lot better.

3 1/4LB LOBSTER IN SUPREME BROTH ($19.80/LB).
The supreme broth tastes flavoursome and has a tasty broth flavour, without tasting salty. As for the lobster, it is perfectly cooked with a nice bouncy texture along with a very slight hint of wine.

CRAB MEAT AND TOFU IN ABALONE SAUCE ($18.80).
The abalone sauce tastes very light and the tofu is perfectly cooked, keeping the shape rather than looking mushy. Furthermore, there is also a bit of canned straw mushrooms in the sauce as well. If anything, I assumed the highlight would be the crab meat but the pieces are shredded in the sauce, so do not expect bite sizes of meat. Although for tofu fans, this is recommended.

SAUTEED GEODUCK AND SCALLOPS ($25.80).
The large scallops taste very moist and tender, not overcooked. Furthermore, the slices of geoduck taste fresh with a nice soft crunch and not chewy at all. As for the vegetables, the green peas taste fresh as well as crisp, along with a nice crunch.

YEUNG CHOW FRIED RICE ($14.80).
The fried rice is fluffy, the ingredients are properly fused together, and there is a good amount of BBQ pork and shrimp. However, the fried rice tastes slightly oily. In addition, the yeung chow fried rice tastes average and has been better at Kirin.

2LB STEAMED ROCK COD ($30.80/LB).
The rock cod is perfectly steamed and delicious, with moist as well as flaky meat. Rock cod is my favourite fish because of the meatiness.

KIRIN SPECIAL SWEETENED SOUP ($4.00/BOWL).
The black sesame is perfectly gooey and the skin is not too thick. In addition, the sweetened soup tastes sweet but not overly, and has a couple of dried logan.

DOUBLE BOILED BIRDS NEST WITH COCONUT CREAM ($28.80/BOWL).
The coconut cream tastes a bit watered down, does not even have the slightest flavour of coconut, and is not even slightly sweet. I definitely do not recommend ordering this especially for coconut fans, because you may be disappointed. Furthermore, this is a poorly made birds nest dessert.

COMPLIMENTARY RED BEAN SOUP AND COCONUT TAPIOCA.
The red bean soup has a nice thickened consistency and does not taste overly sweet. As for the other, the coconut tapioca dessert has coconut flakes and tastes more smooth, since there is less tapioca.

POSITIVES
- Some dishes are above average
- Above average service
- Nice atmosphere

NEGATIVES
- Pricey
- Service is below average for a "Kirin" restaurant
- Plates were not changed and it took twenty minutes for someone to grab the bill when the restaurant was almost empty

LITTLE THINGS
- I have never tried the dim sum at this location and would
- Dim sum post on Kirin at City Square [here]
- I liked Kirin more when it was one server to a table
- Sun Sui Wah's quality is better

Food: 3/5
Service: 2.5/5
