No. 1 Chinese Restaurant 第一家菜館

RESTAURANT IS NOW CLOSED

By the way, I'm pretty upset the restaurant is closed because the cook serves one of the BEST, ABSOLUTE BEST, cream and butter sauce. What a shame. And the staff is incredibly friendly.

Eh… No. 1 Chinese Restaurant is not my first choice for dinner and I did not really expect much from them. Plus, with a name like theirs... a lot of people take it seriously and go all crazy if the food tastes horrible, but I usually just disregard it.

The interior looks like a typical Chinese restaurant but everything looks really clean. Walking in, the restaurant gives an impression that they are very non-Asin friendly, with helpful and attentive staff.

CRAB MEAT CREAM CORN SOUP ($6.25).
The cream of corn soup has a rich yellow color but tastes only average. There is a slight naturally sweetness from the corn and a few pieces of crab meat.

2 1/4lb CREAM AND BUTTER SAUCE CRAB ($13.80/LB) AND YEE MEIN NOODLES ($5.00).
The cream and butter sauce tastes so good, like .25 away from tasting perfect! The cream, the butter, the batter, the flavours, and the consistency of the sauce is pretty much perfect. However, unfortunately the yee mein noodles are undercooked and taste hard. If the noodles were cooked longer, I would have slurped everything up and had a bile smile on my face!

SICHUAN PRAWNS ($12.95).
I was hoping for deep fried prawns, but meh. The prawns have a nice bounciness and the green beans taste crisp, along with a nice settled medium level of spiciness.

ASSORTED MEAT AND TOFU HOT POT ($9.95).
The sauce tastes very flavourful and is neither salty nor oily. After digging through the hot pot, the barbecue pork tastes very tender which I did not expect. As for the deep fried tofu, it tastes very delicious and juicy. Continuing along, the Chinese mushrooms taste really juicy as well and soaks up the delicious sauce. The hot pot also has pieces of chicken which taste okay and not too dry. The last ingredients are scallop which tastes moist, and the squid.

DEEP FRIED CRISPY CHICKEN ($10.50).
The skin has a nice crispiness and the chicken tastes tender, not dry.

BEEF WITH BROCCOLI ($9.50).
The slices of beef tastes tender, the broccoli does not taste overcooked, and the sauce tastes really light, neither salty nor oily. I am not a fan of these dishes in general but this one is quite tasty.

COMPLIMENTARY FORTUNE COOKIES AND PUDDING.
At the end of dinner, the restaurant surprised me because I thought the food would just be average and nothing special, but the dishes taste a bit above average and pretty good. Especially the cream and butter sauce! As for the service, the owner's son is very attentive and tried his best to please every customer. Overall, I consider the restaurant to be non-Asian friendly with traditional Chinese dishes. If anything, the menu may be somewhat limited but I would get take out from here if I lived near by.

POSITIVES
- Friendly owners and staff
- Above average food

NEGATIVES
- Not much of an atmosphere

Food: 3.5/5
Service: 3/5
