Kam Wah Loong Seafood Restaurant 金華龍海鮮酒家

RESTAURANT IS NOW CLOSED

This is my second visit to Kam Wah Loong and I remember their lamb hot pot was one of the better ones, which made me revisit. The restaurant has around fifteen to eighteen tables and can be considered one of the cleaner restaurants along Kingsway Street. In addition, I like the use of disposable tablecloths which are a lot more sanitary (partly also because they were setting up for the next day's dim sum).

Rather than ordering a la carte, BF wanted to get any 4 items for $55.80 which includes a complimentary house special steamed chicken, soup, rice and dessert. I am usually against set menus because I find the portions smaller and not much money is saved.

BLACK CHICKEN HERBAL SOUP.
There is a good amount of herbal ingredients along with a chicken broth herbal flavour. However, there was a strand of hair in the soup.

SPECIAL STEAMED CHICKEN.
The chicken tastes very healthy as well as bland, and neither too dry nor salty. Furthermore, the meat has a nice tender stiffness. As for the ginger sauce, the taste is very light and there could have been a stronger ginger flavour. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the chicken because sometimes I prefer clean eats.

3LB CREAM AND BUTTER SAUCE CRAB ($10.80/LB).
I eat crab a lot and actually had one last night at Phekda. Having said that, when the owner showed us the live crab, it did not look 3lb so we confirmed again if it was and she said yes. Some Chinese restaurants overcharge consumers by less than 1/4lb, emphasize on less than 1/4lb. However, the crab looks and tastes like less than 2 3/4lb crab, not 3lb. More like 2 1/2lb at most!

As for the taste, the sauce tastes creamy well as battery and is a properly made cream and butter sauce. The sauce definitely made up for last night's crab and the price is pretty reasonable, so I consider us paying $13.00/lb instead. As for the overcharging, there is a funny story. I was with my friend at a different restaurant and we ordered a crab, where the owner tried overcharging us by a bit over 1/4lb too. My friend showed his Measurement Canada business card as well as his photo ID, and the owner ran to the kitchen and the manager came out. The manager said something must have been wrong with the scale, offered to reweigh the crab and gave us the real weight. The manager then apologized and tried to confirm that my friend would not come back again to check his scales. Some people...

SHREDDED BEEF WITH BLACK PEPPERY ON SIZZLING PLATE.
The dish is served on a sizzling hot plate and includes beef, red and green pepper, as well as onion. As for the beef, the meat is shredded too thin and does not taste tender enough. However, the dish does not taste salty or too oily (only a tad).

HALIBUT AND PUMPKIN HOT POT.
The sauce tastes flavourful without tasting salty, and is just right. Furthermore, the pieces of halibut taste moist and lightly battered. In addition, the pumpkin does to taste too mushy or hard. I really like the halibut and pumpkin hot pot, definitely recommended.

MUTTON WITH DRY BEAN CURD STICK HOT POT.
Some of the pieces of lamb taste extremely dry as well as chewy, while other pieces taste tender. Also, some of the pieces of meat have skin attached (which is selective) and I do not see many Chinese restaurants do that. This could be because the skin tastes very chewy (in this case). As for the sauce, it tastes flavourful as well as delicious and makes the bean curd sticks taste amazing. The highlight is the bean curd rather than the lamb.

STEAMED RICE.
The rice is served in a stainless steel container which is great to prevent it from getting cold. Although I wonder why the rice is only a third full? Perhaps because it was just the two of us? LOL either way, I wonder because I like to pack up rice. I am too lazy to wash and cook rice, and rather do something useful like baking.

STEAMED EGGPLANT IN HOMESTYLE.
Usually the eggplant includes pork but we passed because I wanted a healthier dish. The slices of eggplant taste simple as well as bland, and has fresh garlic as well as slices of Chinese mushroom. Kam Wah's tastes a lot better than Kwan Luck's because of the use of fresh garlic than jarred. Unfortunately though, the eggplant tastes slightly overcooked and mushy.

COMPLIMENTARY RED BEAN SOUP.
The red bean soup has a really thick consistency and tastes bland; however, not too sweet.

POSITIVES
- Great hot pot sauces
- Some dishes are better than others

NEGATIVES
- No service (usually for two people who order so much food, the service is pretty good)
- Hair in soup
- Overcharging customers on live seafood, despite speaking up to the owner when the crab was live

Food: 3/5
Service: 2/5
