Au Wing Kee 歐榮記

Asides from being in the area and out of convenience, tonight is around my fifth time coming to Au Wing Kee and the reason is kind of silly. On every single visit we have been here, there is always a non-Asian man who brings in his chihuahua and asks everyone for money. He is in his 20s-30s, not homeless or on drugs, and clothing wise looks clean as well as decent. Once a customer gave him $5.00 too! Some people are just too nice… he was non-Asian too lol. I guess it is the novelty of seeing if he would show up for the sixth time. Plus, I wanted to try the sweet and sour pork too.

Au Wing Kee is an average typical Chinese restaurant and the food is decent. However, the cream and butter sauce is very bland, despite trying at least three times. As for the interior, Au Wing King is considered a "dirty" Chinese restaurant and is not very clean at all. Meaning, dirty table settling, tables, chairs, and you do not want to use the washroom. Washing your hands in the washroom at Au Wing Kee defeats the purpose and you are better off with hand sanitizer from your bag.

HOT AND SOUR SOUP WITH BEAN CURD, SHRIMP AND SHREDDED PORK ($6.50).
The soup tastes tangy but not very spicy and there is a fair amount of ingredients. There are wood ear mushroom, preserved vegetables, green onion, baby shrimp, shredded pork and carrot.

3LB GINGER AND GREEN ONION SAUCE CRAB ($13.99/LB).
The crab was deep fried for a bit too long and the shell crumbles into tiny pieces. It is not fun having to spit out bits of shells in every bite. As for the sauce, there is a light broth flavour along with a hint of ginger and green onion.

2 1/2LB CONSOMME SAUCE LOBSTER ($17.99/LB).
The lobster is nicely cooked and the meat tastes tender with a nice bounce. In addition, the sauce has a tasty house broth and tastes flavourful, much better than the ginger and green onion.

SWEET AND SOUR PORK ($9.50).
I had such a bad craving for sweet n' sour pork and assumed that Au Wing Kee would make a good variation. Although unfortunately, the meat tastes very tough. The pork tastes rock hard as well as stiff, and cannot even be chewed on. Furthermore, there is only three cuts of pineapple?! I remember as a child, sweet and sour pork was always tasty almost everywhere… now it is so hard finding good ones.

YEUNG CHOW FRIED RICE ($7.50).
SAUTEED BEEF WITH BROCOLLI ($9.95).
The fried rice tastes average and not heavy on the salt, basically does the job at a good price. As for the beef with broccoli, the meat has not been tenderized and tastes very chewy. However, the dish is not too oily and the broccoli has a nice crunch.

COMPLIMENTARY GREEN BEAN SOUP.
The dessert soup has a good consistency and tastes slightly sweet but not overly.

Au Wing Kee is another average (at best) Chinese restaurant and the prices are cheap. Also, there is 10% off for take out. As for the staff, the waitresses are friendly and no one ever looks miserable, although it may be hard to wave someone down. However, I have other preferences of "dirty" Chinese restaurants that I would revisit before coming here.

POSITIVES
- Open late night
- Reasonable prices
- Friendly staff

NEGATIVES
- Dirty restaurant
- There is a lot better

Food: 2.5/5
Service: 2.5/5
