Sing Kee 勝記

REVISIT POST ON SING KEE [HERE]

Wow, it is 2:00am right now and I just came back from another late night dinner, is it my withdrawals of spot prawns? LOL… hopefully not. BF and I came to Sing Kee tonight for their herbal soup and the restaurant is one of the few that currently offers fresh oysters and scallops! In total, I have tried Sing Kee three times (including tonight) and not for the atmosphere. On the first visit, a couple of my friends had a craving for peking duck at because Sing Kee is open late night, we tried it out (which was not very good). On the second, the visit was around a month ago which is why we know the restaurant offers fresh scallops and oysters (although the scallops were not available tonight).

Usually I do not mind if a restaurant is dirty and I suck it up because some "ghetto" Chinese restaurants have yummy or decent tasting food. However, there is something about Sing Kee that makes me cringe... The restaurant is seriously very dirty, no exaggerations needed.

The tables have velour tablecloths that drape close to the ground and after seating, touches your clothes (I am a wee bit OCD). Fashionista thoughts... I wore Juicy Couture velour pants here once and the velour tablecloth felt super weird because they would kind of stick onto my pants. This time around, I wore shorts because I was too lazy to change (come on, 2:00am) and the velour tablecloth felt really dirty as well as uncomfortable when they touched my thighs (mainly because of the awkward velour material), so I tucked the tablecloth underneath the glass to prevent it from touching my legs LOL.

BLACK FREE RANGE CHICKEN HERBAL SOUP ($5.90/BOWL).
The soup tastes slow cooked, flavourful as well as healthy, but lacks in the herbal taste. However, the herbal soup does taste extremely rich and better as well as cheaper, than Star Anise's hot water and green onions ginseng soup.

FRESH STEAMED GARLIC AND GREEN ONION, AND BLACK BEAN SAUCE OYSTERS ($2.00/EACH).
The oysters taste fresh, perfectly steamed and not overcooked. Honestly, one of the main reasons for coming here tonight was for the fresh oysters! The ginger and green onion ones taste fresh and gingery as well as garlicky, and BF went for the black bean sauce oyster? Why? No idea. He does not even like them…

CONSOMME SOUP CLAMS ($6.50).
The clams taste delicious, absolutely delicious. Fresh, tasty and not overcooked. As for the broth, there is a flavourful and rich taste without tasting sauce. I always thought that Congee Noodle King's consommé soup tastes better but nope, Sing Kee's wins.

STEAMED BROCOLLI ($6.50).
The broccoli tastes perfectly steamed and barely cooked which is perfect for me, tasty with a nice crunch. However, bad for those who like their vegetables cooked longer.

BEEF WITH BITTER MELON IN BLACK BEAN SAUCE ($6.50).
The bitter melon is nicely sautéed and tastes slightly crunchy. As for the meat, the beef tastes tender and not chewy or tough. Furthermore, the black bean sauce does not taste overwhelming and the natural flavours of the beef as well as bitter melon is there. Also, despite the heavy oily appearance, the dish overall is not too greasy.

PAN FRIED BEEF WITH RICE NOODLES ($9.50).
There is a generous amount of rice noodles as well as a fair amount of bean sprouts, but a bit skimpy on the beef. The slices of beef tastes tender, not chewy or tough, and the rice noodles taste perfectly cooked, not mushy.

POSITIVES
- Owner is attentive and friendly, as well as the waitresses
- Herbal soup and fresh oysters, not many restaurants have both items at the moment!

NEGATIVES
- Dirty restaurant
- Food is average (depending on what is ordered)

LITTLE THINGS
- Revisit post on Sing Kee [HERE]
- Peking duck and deep fried prawns are the only dishes that I do not recommend
- I would revisit

Food: 2.5/5
Service: 3.5/5
